Love never fails, except for when it does.

September 20, 2016

I am not a Biblical scholar, but I needed to make a comment. I could be wrong, but I hope you read on.

Let's talk about this verse. 1 Corinthians 13:8 states, "Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away."

We as hopeless romantics like to quote the "Love never fails" part of this verse. We like to take it out of context and twist it for our own personal needs and situations.

Today I saw a tweet that far too many of my friends retweeted, and I may or may not have vented a bit about it.

This was the tweet:

Please do not believe this.

Sweet friends, love does fail because we fail to love. Love fails because people fail. We fail each other all the time.

The beauty of the verse that says "Love never fails" is that the only love that never fails is the love of Jesus Christ. He is Love in its purest, most lovely form.

There is one pure, stunning love, and we cannot recreate it. We can only seek to mimick it. That is the beauty of Jesus. Human love is flawed because of the nature of sin.

To the woman whose parents got divorced, a failed marriage does not mean that love did not exist.

To the man whose father left because he could not handle a family, that does not mean that love did not exist.

To anyone who has ever had a broken heart because you lost someone in your life to a failed relationship, it is not because love did not exist. It is because the person you loved and lost was not the great love God has for your life.

Love can exist in failure. Love can exist through pain. Love can exist through the power of Jesus Christ.

So, please do not believe that your love for any person is negated because of statements like those above. Your ability to love sets you apart. You will fail in your endeavors to love purely, but take heart, for you are allowed to fail because of the love that never could.

There is one love that does not fail. It is the love of Jesus.

Much love,
